How practical would it be to replace a gas engine with a rebuilt Volkswagen diesel in a Volkswagen Golf.?

Older gas Golfs are cheap, but not so with the diesels. Plus the diesels are hard to find. If it is a straight swap, or close to it I could save thousands of dollars.

I have thought of doing a similar swap with my '88 Cabriolet. there is a lot more to it then just replacing the motor. You would be better off to try to find a diesel donor Golf the same year as yours. The diesel has a slightly different dash with the
