Mazda 3 Check engine light code retrieval?

I know in my honda I can pull engine codes in the driveway with a paperclip. What is the procedure for pulling engine codes on an 05 mazda 3? My friends CEL came on right at 75000 miles. Could it just be a maintenance light for the mileage?

Well is it a check engine light or a service engine light? Need to check the owner's manual to see what the light is indicating. It could just be a dummy service light.
